Snow Science Training!

Hi there SnowSchool-ers,
Tomorrow is our last training day of a great training session. We just got back from a wonderful day of hiking with Edna as our guide. Conditions were unreal! Huge flakes falling, untouched snow, it was magical. Thanks to each of you who made it out for Ecology Day. Such a blast and so informational, as always.
TomorrowTuesday, January 6th is Snow Science training with FS hydrologist Brian Anderson. It's sure to be a very educational training for us all. As usual, carpoool will meet at 8:45am outside the downtown office. Park on Parkhill Dr. If you'd like to drive yourself, feel free to meet us at the Nordic Lodge around 9:30 or so. Plan to spend the majority of the day in the snow (lots of layers and warm clothing). Bring lunch, water, notepad if you'd like to take notes. We'll plan on heading back to Boise around 3pm at the very latest.
Our first day of SnowSchool is THIS WEDNESDAY! We're still short one leader on Wednesday and two on Thursday. Please let me know if you can help! Let's make sure we kick off this season well.
Thanks so much for being part of this program. So excited to get started. And thanks to all of you who have joined us for trainings and made each day such a blast!

Let's build an igloo...and other things

Hi hi all,

I hope you all had a wonderful holiday season! It's been snowing so much up at Bogus and the snowshoeing is absolutely wonderful. I was up behind the Lodge yesterday stomping out a quarry for igloo blocks and building up a platform for the igloo and was continually amazed at the beauty and peace of the freshly fallen, untouched snow. We were breaking trail and at some points, thigh-deep in new snow. Incredible!
I just wanted to remind each of you that this Friday, January 2nd will be our Igloo Building Day. We'll meet to carpool at 8:45am on Parkhill Dr. (outside the Bogus office, 2600 N. Bogus Basin Rd.). Bring a lunch, some water, and snow shoes if you have them (we have lots to loan if not). It's sure to be a great time, laid back, and just good ol' fashioned fun in the snow.
The day after, Saturday, January 3rd, will be our second Activities Training Day. Thanks to each of you who made it to our first training of the season earlier this month. It was a great day in the snow and was wonderful to see all the volunteers, new and old, out for a day in the snow. Thanks to all of you for making that December training such a success! For this training, we'll again meet at 8:45am to carpool, same location for Igloo Building (Parkhill Dr.) and finish up by 3pm. This training will serve as a mock-SnowSchool day and will end with volunteer having the chance to model and lead some activities. For new volunteers, we'll start the day taking pass pictures with HR at the Simplot Lodge. We'll then catch up with the others at the Nordic Lodge after. Please bring lunch, water, snowshoes if you have them, pen and paper if you'd like to take notes, and your personal calendars to sign up for leadership days.
Please let me know if you'd like to participate in either or both of these days so we don't leave anyone behind at the carpool. You are also welcome to forego the carpool and just meet us at the Nordic Lodge at 9:30.
Thank you again for being part of SnowSchool! You're all part of what makes this program so special and unique. Hope to see you soon. Have a wonderful celebration ringing in the new year. See you in 2015!
PS. If you can't make the trainings but would still like to volunteer, check out the Volunteer Schedule on the SnowSchool website. You can then email me with dates you'd like to volunteer.
Thanks again!

First SnowSchool Training Day!

Hi SnowSchoolers!

Just wanted to send you a friendly reminder that this SATURDAY, DECEMBER 13th is the first training day of the 2015 SnowSchool season!

Our focus for this day will be on SnowSchool activities. Kerry McClay and I will take you through a mock-SnowSchool day to give you an idea of what a day on the snow looks like with the students. We’ll model the Three Essential activities (snow pit analysis, snow water equivalent, and watershed map) as well as a handful of the other experiential activities. Plan to spend most of the day outside.

Bring appropriate clothing to be outside (warm layers, gloves, boots, etc.), snowshoes if you have them (there will be some to borrow at the Nordic Lodge if you don’t have, or want to use, your own pair), a sack lunch (microwave in the Lodge), lots of water, and a pen and paper if you’d like to take notes. Also, you’ll be able to sign up for volunteer leadership days so bring along your personal calendars. The link below is our sign up page on the website so you can take a look at it beforehand:

For those of you interested in carpooling we’ll meet at 8:45am outside of the Bogus Basin sales office (2600 N. Bogus Basin Rd.). Please don’t park in the parking lot, we can park along Parkhill Dr. just north of the sales office doors and right in front of an apartment complex. We’ll plan to arrive around 9:30 at the Lodge and wrap the day up around 3pm.

If you need to leave early that is no problem at all. You are welcome to meet us up at the lodge around 9:30am or just at the carpool and caravan up. Feel free to bring a friend along if you have someone in mind who is interested in SnowSchool.

Thanks so much and looking forward to Saturday. Come on, snow.....

Feel free to email me anytime if anything comes up or you have specific questions.

See you soon,

Ilyse Sakamoto
